I think this may have been one of my favourite books of 2017 so far… Who knew I liked thrillers? I certainly didn’t realise quite how much I loved them until recently. I really am loving the S.T.A.G.S/ One of us is Lying type books I’ve been reading this year. So if you know of any books similar to S.T.A.G.S please do let me know, I can’t wait to read more of this genre.
So getting into the actual review and stuff now, let me tell you what S.T.A.G.S is all about.
Greer MacDonald, new student to prestigious boarding school fondly known as ‘S.T.A.G.S’. Everything about the school is posh and medieval; the uniform, the teachers, even the students. Greer feels rather out of her depth and feels unwanted by the new school life until one day she receives an invitation to spend midterm at Longcress estate. This was a clear honour but should she think twice before she accepts an invitation with such acquaintances.
From the very first line ‘I think I might be a murderer’ we know there is a death. From the second chapter we know who. Now, I don’t know about you (if you have read it) but I felt as though I was reading a spoiler. I did, however love the way the author managed to appear to tell us so much but in reality she told us so little. I honestly believe that this book had some of the best, most memorable plot twists I’ve read in forever. I literally had to put the book down at certain points and take a break so that I could take in what had just happened. This book is just so creepy, at times deeply disturbing but it had me hooked. I loved it and I just need more. I need M.A Bennett to write another one.
Now, M.A Bennett has ended S.T.A.G.S in such a way that could have a sequel (with the dramatic, very film like epilogue she wrote) or it could be left as a standalone. As much as I would adore a sequel I think I would rather S.T.A.G.S a standalone. This is for fear of the sequel not living up to the first book (although I’m probably being stupid) , either way I would be happy and 100% would pick up the sequel.
This book had everything I could want: Creepy characters, intrigue, dramatic plot twists and a kinda cool blast from the past vibe.
I also took this picture which I think is pretty cool and I’m also just so excited to see the author at DeptCon 3 so I can tell her myself how much I loved her book!
